And answers to them

What is mining?

At a high level, mining is the process by which new coins are issued and transactions verified. In order to be the recipient of a newly issued coin, a miner must solve a specific puzzle. There is only one puzzle at a time and it’s public to all miners. The first miner to correctly solve it is issued coins. A miner is a program or application that is specifically designed to solve these type of puzzles. The puzzles are difficult problems that take signifigant processing to solve.

Mining plays other critical roles. Although Charity Miner does not mine Bitcoin, if you would like to learn more about the process and role mining plays in cryptocurrency, the bitcoin.org website is a great place to start.

Will this slow my computer down?

Charity Miner should not slow your computer down. It automatically reduces how much processing it uses based on how much is needed for all other operations (above the threshold on the options page).

However, we’ve set defaults based on our limited testing environment. Your computer and comfort level with how much procesisng to use may vary. We encourage you to adjust the settings on the options page.

If you cannot find settings that work for you, please reach out to us at hello@charityminer.io.

How will this affect my computer?

If your computer is on and you’re not using it, Charity Miner will consume processing power, within reason. If you’re using your device, it will only use a small portion of the processing power and should not be noticeable.

While running Charity Miner your browser will consume more power than without it. If your leave your device on anyway, we expect it to be a marginal increase compared to the amount of power already being used to keep it on. We are currently running benchmarks so we can share real numbers. You can configure the application to use less power by lowering the CPU threshold values on the options page.

If you would like to help us benchmark, please reach out: hello@charityminer.io

How are liters per hour calculated?

At a high level, liters are caclulated by dividing your mining rate (in dollars) by the cost of a liter (in dollars).

An estimate of the cost of a liter (see learn more):

In order to estimate liters, we convert your mining rate into expected coins per hour then use the current price of the coin to exchange to USD. Next we assume $30 brings water to one person for life and that they will consume 64 ounces of water each day (eight 8oz cups or 1.89 liters). Using population data, we calculate the average remaining lifespan and use that to arrive at an average total number of liters. We divide the cost of $30 by average total number of liters. This gives us a very rough cost per liter. We can then apply a conversion from $/hour to liters/hour.

What portion goes to charity: water?

We will donate at least 70% of generated currency to charity: water. This is based off our initial calculations and expected mining rates. In practice, we believe that we should be able to donate more, but we will follow up here soon. Our current expenses include servers, domains, email hosting, pool fees, and the Chrome Web Store fee.

What is your fundraising goal?

Our initial goal is to sponser an entire project which costs between $10,000 and $25,000. You can read more about projects on the charity: water project page
